Biography
British producer, composer, and DJ Leon Vynehall first gained attention through house-oriented productions yet has always operated outside strict genre limits, drawing from ambient, jazz, and experimental sources while also creating club material. His 2014 release Music for the Uninvited and the 2016 set Rojus (Designed to Dance) deliver luminous, melodic pieces that honor the roots of house and garage without losing touch with contemporary underground dance scenes. After those extended EPs, he delivered his first full-length statement in 2018 with Nothing Is Still, a family tribute shaped by minimalism and contemporary classical approaches. His 2021 album Rare, Forever shifted back toward club environments, aligning more closely with left-field U.K. bass than earlier house references. In parallel with his studio albums, Vynehall has also supplied mixes for the DJ-Kicks and Fabric Presents series.
He began as a musician on drums and piano before adding synthesizers. House tracks started appearing under his name in 2012 with the EPs Mauve on Well Rounded Housing Project and Gold Language on ManMakeMusic. That same year he formed the duo Laszlo Dancehall alongside Christian Piers, also known as A1 Bassline, and the project issued three 12"s on ManMakeMusic. Three further solo 12"s arrived in 2013: Brother/Sister via Aus Music, the Open EP on Martyn’s 3024 imprint, and Rosalind on Well Rounded Housing Project. The following year proved pivotal when he placed the seven-track mini-album Music for the Uninvited on 3024; the collection mixed exuberant, nostalgic club cuts with slower interludes and earned strong critical notice, appearing on multiple year-end lists. Also in 2014, the single “Butterflies” came out on Royal Oak and met with comparable success.
In 2015 Vynehall contributed “Midnight on Rainbow Road” to Rush Hour’s compilation Musik for Autobahns 2 (Ambient Race Car Music). A 12" edition featuring a beat-driven version followed on the same label in early 2016. Later that April, Running Back issued his second mini-album, Rojus (Designed to Dance). While these club-focused projects emerged, he had already begun shaping Nothing Is Still in 2014, using minimalist textures and atmospheric detail to recount his grandparents’ years in America; Ninja Tune released the album in 2018. The next year he assembled a wide-ranging DJ-Kicks installment for !K7 that moved across soul, industrial, IDM, and ambient. After the introspective first album, 2021’s Rare, Forever examined his current outlook by uniting dancefloor functionality with reflective ambient work. In 2022 he compiled a Fabric Presents volume for the London club’s label, incorporating several exclusive tracks.
