Biography
Jayda G channels boundless vitality and a sunny outlook into house productions that glow with inviting warmth and carry an otherworldly sheen. Rather than chasing the newest club anthems, her sets spotlight vintage disco, boogie, and soul selections, with the artist often vocalizing along and moving freely behind the decks, an approach that positions her foremost as a live entertainer. Although spreading joy and forging dance-floor bonds remains her central purpose, her creations also reflect a profound attachment to the natural world and an active commitment to environmental stewardship. After completing a master’s degree in Resource and Environmental Management that centered on environmental toxicology, she folded killer-whale sounds into the lush, euphoric grooves of her 2019 debut album Significant Changes. A Grammy nomination followed for the 2020 single “Both of Us,” and her first mix compilation, DJ-Kicks, arrived in 2021. The 2023 sophomore album Guy marked a turn toward vocal-rich dance-pop, shaped by the memory of her late father and grounded in extensive family-history research.
Raised amid mountains, forests, waterways, and clean air in Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada, a considerable distance from Vancouver, Jayda Guy studied classical piano and violin from an early age while absorbing jazz, blues, and R&B. She began amassing records and experimenting with mixing in the early 2010s. A short stay in Los Angeles deepened her engagement with house music, and after settling in Vancouver she started linking up with local house DJs while producing her own material around 2014. Following several jointly hosted events with Norway’s DJ Fett Burger, the pair established the Freakout Cult label, releasing their co-produced 2015 track “NYC Party Track” and the Butter Sessions single “Velvet Vortex” alongside Sleep D. Her initial solo EPs, Sixth Spirit of the Bay on 1080p and Jaydaisms on Freakout Cult, both surfaced in 2016.
Increasing international bookings prompted a 2017 move to Berlin. She supplied remixes for HAIM and Perel and issued further EPs such as Swirl Shake Mix on Geography Records. After the 2018 single “Diva Bitch,” she inaugurated JMG Recordings with the Sacred Spaces EP, both featuring vocals by her close friend and frequent collaborator Alexa Dash. Having earned her master’s degree, she titled her Ninja Tune debut Significant Changes after the most common phrase in her thesis; the album appeared in March 2019, shortly after she organized two JMG Talks sessions in London that invited emerging scientists to discuss their research. The 2020 double A-side Both of Us/Are U Down yielded her most-streamed track to date and earned a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 63rd Grammy Awards. Her edition of the DJ-Kicks series followed in 2021. In 2022 she teamed with Aluna on “Mine O’ Mine” and reworked Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero,” then delivered her second full-length, Guy, in 2023, threading the set with archival recordings of her father, William Richard Guy.
