Biography
Jordan Alexander, performing as Mall Grab, crafts house music as an Australian producer whose sound draws from an eclectic mix spanning hardcore punk, drum'n'bass, and electro. He surfaced in 2015, selecting the alias from a mocking phrase aimed at skateboarders who grip the board wrong so the tape scrapes their clothing—an accessory habit that underscores the playful spirit of his tracks and his frequently impish public presence. Numerous EPs preceded his first album, among them Sun Ra in 2016 and How the Dogs Chill, Vol. 1 in 2018, before What I Breathe arrived as his debut full-length in 2022.
Newcastle, Australia, is his birthplace, where his parents’ rock & roll collection first sparked his interest; during adolescence he gravitated toward electronic and dance sounds, particularly electro and the ascent of the Ed Banger crew. Maturing tastes later aligned with understated, atmospheric house records, prompting his initial EP, Feel U, issued in 2015 on the Canadian imprint Collect-Call; even though he was the label’s first unsigned artist, the release sold out rapidly. That early buzz triggered a run of Mall Grab singles and EPs on British labels, each exploring a distinct mood—airy textures on Alone via Shall Not Fade, nocturnal atmospheres on Elegy for 1080p, and a sultry atmosphere throughout the Sun Ra EP on Church.
European demand intensified by 2016, leading Alexander to move to London and fueling an exceptionally busy period. He opened the year by dropping his widely circulated Alicia Keys edit “Let U Kno” on Hokkaido Dance Club, then started a monthly Rinse FM residency. Steel City Dance Discs, his own imprint and a subsidiary of Shall Not Fade, launched that summer, while two further EPs closed the year: the tougher Menace II Society on Unknown to the Unknown and the disco-tinged I Just Wanna on Hot Haus Records. Brighter textures and clear hip-hop references defined the 2017 Pool Party EP, whose title signaled its summery orientation.
How the Dogs Chill, Vol. 1 followed in 2018, and Growing Pains appeared the next year. Later in 2019 he issued Strangers, a joint release with Skin on Skin; in 2020 he collaborated with Baltimore hardcore punk outfit Turnstile on the remix EP Share a View. That same year saw Don’t Keep the Fire Burning, and in 2021 the prolific producer delivered the high-energy Steel City Dance Discs, Vol. 20. His first album, What I Breathe, surfaced in 2022 featuring guest appearances from Nia Archives, D Double E, Novelist, and Turnstile’s Brendan Yates. Continuing the pattern of partnerships, he joined U.K. DJ Effy in 2024 for the viral tech-house single “iluv.”
