Hailing from Australia yet now residing in London, Tristan Hallis creates house music under the name DJ Boring, with productions that move across emotional registers from introspective melancholy to euphoric peaks. An unknown figure until 2016, he rose to international touring prominence after his track “Winona” suddenly achieved viral traction. Initially tied to the lo-fi house movement, he evolved his approach on subsequent releases including the 2020 EP Like Water and the 2023 EP Beautiful Strangers, weaving trance and techno influences into his fluid, propulsive style. His first mix album, a volume in the DJ-Kicks series, came out in 2024.

Hallis began posting material as DJ Boring near 2013, yet his hazy, wistful interpretation of deep house only connected with broader listeners once “Winona” surfaced in 2016. Built around atmospheric synth pads, abrupt bass sweeps, and above all a striking vocal excerpt of Winona Ryder recounting a casting director’s remark that she lacked the looks for acting, the piece landed on YouTube in late September that year and swiftly accumulated hundreds of thousands of streams. Timing likely amplified its reach, given that the Ryder-led science-fiction/horror series Stranger Things had recently exploded into mainstream visibility. Numerous writers suddenly scrutinized the motives of this previously anonymous artist alongside similarly tongue-in-cheek, ’90s-referencing peers such as Ross from Friends and DJ Seinfeld, grouping them under a supposed “lo-fi house” wave. Notwithstanding the skeptics, the recording cultivated a devoted audience and received a vinyl issue on E-Beamz by year’s end.

Boring soon emerged as a sought-after DJ and live act, appearing regularly at clubs and festivals worldwide. In 2017 he issued the EPs Sunday Avenue (LPH White), Different Dates (Lost Palms), and Hidden Messages (E-Beamz). He joined Frits Wentink for 2018’s Wasted Years of Pumping Iron (Bobby Donny) and Stanley Schmidt for Vienna 001, while his solo EP For Tahn appeared on Shall Not Fade. Remixes he supplied for Jacques Renault and Lee “Scratch” Perry surfaced in 2019, followed by the 2020 EP Like Water on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour label. After additional remixes, he delivered the EP Beautiful Strangers via Running Back in 2023. His installment in !K7’s DJ-Kicks series arrived in 2024 and featured one of his more energetic cuts, “You Luv Me.”
