Hector Barbour, the Glasgow-based DJ and producer known as Denis Sulta, crafts buoyant and tuneful house records that retain a distinct underground edge. He entered the world in Glasgow during 1993 and developed an early passion for club sounds that led him straight to his first position at the city’s storied Rubadub record shop. While working there alongside colleagues deeply immersed in the local scene, he began learning both production techniques and DJ skills. The ready supply of equipment and candid feedback encouraged him to start making tracks and organizing his own events, beginning with after-parties held in out-of-the-way locations before he secured recurring slots at Subclub. Label head and fellow employee Dan Monox soon signed Barbour’s first EP, issued under the alias Atlus on Dixon Basement Avenue Jams. Those initial cuts carried a darker atmosphere, yet repeated live appearances gradually steered the sound toward brighter, more celebratory territory. To mark the shift, he flipped the spelling of Atlus into Sulta and placed “Denis” in front, adjusting the conventional spelling after a printing mistake removed one “n.” Subsequent EPs appeared on the respected Glasgow label Numbers, prompting him to launch his own imprint and associated platform, Sulta Selects. He routed the venture through an international run of shows whose popularity prompted the creation of a dedicated outdoor event, FLY Open Air: Sulta Selects, staged at Hopetoun House on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Ninja Tune put out the 2019 EP Aye Spoake te Sumwuhn & They Listened.
