Drawing inspiration from the '80s synth funk pioneered by the S.O.S. Band, Midnight Star, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, the European production duo Cool Million set out with a clear objective: to "take soul back to the future." Danish songwriter and devoted soul enthusiast Frank Ryle, who previously operated the online publication Soulportal.dk, established the project. Their inaugural release, the track "Naughty Girl," appeared on a compilation from Expansion Records, after which German producer Rob Hardt (Chaka Khan, Keith Sweat) joined the lineup. Buoyed by strong reviews for the 2008 debut album Going Out Tonight, the pair enlisted an array of guest vocalists—including '80s soul singers Meli'sa Morgan, Peggi Blu, and Eugene Wilde, plus Leroy Burgess of the '70s R&B trio Black Ivory—for the 2010 follow-up Back for More, issued on Hardt's Sed Soul imprint.
