Biography
French goth rock outfit Corpus Delicti stand out through their robust guitar work, assertive vocal delivery, and propulsive rhythms that occasionally lean danceable. During the middle of the 1990s the group issued three studio albums—Twilight, Sylphes, and Obsessions—before adopting an industrial approach for a single outing credited simply to Corpus; afterward the members parted ways and pursued separate endeavors. Interest in the band has steadily grown into a dedicated cult audience, prompting multiple reissues and anthologies of their limited catalog, frequently augmented by demos and other seldom-heard tracks. In the early 2020s Corpus Delicti reconvened for live appearances, coinciding with the 2022 appearance of The Complete Recordings 1992-1996.
Obscure late-1980s cassette compilations first showcased early Corpus Delicti material, yet the quartet did not officially coalesce until 1992, when they issued their initial demo recordings. The founding roster included vocalist and synth player Sébastien Pietrapiana, bassist Christophe Baudrion, drummer Laurence Romanini, and guitarist Franck Amendola. Their first full-length effort, Twilight, surfaced in 1993 and drew immediate parallels to Bauhaus and Christian Death. Jérôme Schmitt, handling guitars and synths, took Amendola’s place and contributed to both 1994’s Sylphes and 1995’s Obsessions. Numerous goth anthologies featured the band, among them tribute collections devoted to Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and David Bowie; Cleopatra further introduced their music to American listeners via two best-of compilations. Corpus Delicti executed a sharp stylistic pivot with the 1998 industrial album Syn:drom, issued under the shortened name Corpus and incorporating keyboards and programming by David Bachelet. The ensemble then dissolved, with most members launching new projects; Baudrion established the rhythmic noise outfit Kom-Intern before exploring goth- and new wave-inflected rock in Press Gang Metropol alongside Amendola and Pietrapiana.
D-Monic later reissued the band’s catalog with added bonus material and produced the first vinyl editions, while author Tony Leduc-Gugnalons published the 2011 band biography La Déliquescence des Ombres. Corpus Delicti regrouped in the early 2020s, recruiting drummer Laurent Tamagno—known from Hannah and M83—to join the returning Pietrapiana, Baudrion, and Amendola. The reactivated lineup performed across Europe while Cleopatra issued the four-CD box set The Complete Recordings 1992-1996 along with fresh vinyl pressings of the original albums.
