Biography
In 1988, vocalist and guitarist Porl King joined bassist Karl North to launch the goth rock outfit Rosetta Stone in Liverpool, seeking an alternative to the dominant Brit-pop environment of their hometown. The next year, the pair crossed paths with the Mission's Wayne Hussey, who proposed helming production on the group's debut album. He soon stepped away from the project, allowing the self-titled 1990 release to appear without his involvement. Multiple singles surfaced across the decade, leading to the first full-length Adrenaline in 1993, which arrived alongside Foundation Stones and the Epitome EP. During those years Rosetta Stone guided the frequently neglected goth rock and darkwave currents toward wider musical territory, a period when Nine Inch Nails and the Cult received only fleeting national attention. Taking cues from Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, and the Cure, the band charted its own atmospheric territory built on brooding vocals and synth-inspired textures. Tyranny of Inaction followed in 1995, Hiding in Waiting in 1996, and Chemical Emissions in 1998, cementing Rosetta Stone as a flagship Cleopatra act while extending gothic aesthetics into the broader rock mainstream. The group dissolved upon issuing the 2000 covers collection Unerotica, only to reappear in the late 2010s with the albums Seems Like Forever and Cryptology.
