Biography
Emerging from the British goth rock movement of the 1980s, All About Eve distinguished itself through an approach infused with folk-rock elements. Having previously worked as a journalist and played bass in Gene Loves Jezebel, Julianne Regan received encouragement from the Mission U.K. to launch her own project after contributing backing vocals to their recordings. She brought together Tim Bricheno on guitar and Andy Cousin on bass, both formerly of Aemotti Crii, along with Mark Price handling drums, weaving into her compositions allusions to hippie culture and the mysticism of white magic.
Their debut album achieved solid sales across the United Kingdom upon its 1988 release and yielded the successful single "Martha's Harbour." Once Scarlet and Other Stories had been issued and promoted through extensive touring, Bricheno departed to become a member of Sisters of Mercy. Reconvening with Marty Willson-Piper, a key figure in the Church, handling guitar duties led to Touched By Jesus, which received only modest interest. This prompted a shift in musical direction for the subsequent effort. The 1994 album Ultraviolet failed to gain traction amid the prevailing trends, while tensions arising from the label's view of the group compounded existing pressures. Before long, All About Eve disbanded, after which Regan pursued Mice, collaborated with Bernard Butler, initiated the atmospheric Jules et Jim endeavor, and maintained regular employment.
Revival came when longtime associates the Mission resumed live performances and invited Regan to support them as an opener. This opportunity not only reunited the lineup but also spurred independent touring. Following their stint alongside the Mission, the group dedicated approximately two years to acoustic performances, culminating in the 2000 issuance of Fairy Light Nights as a compilation of those unplugged highlights. The following year saw Fairy Light Nights, Vol. 2 along with additional acoustic appearances.
