The Scottish group Lowlife emerged in 1985 with a sound evoking a shadowy blend of the Cocteau Twins and Joy Division/New Order, created by bassist Will Heggie, formerly of the Cocteau Twins during their Garlands period, together with vocalist Craig Lorentson. After signing with the Nightshift label, the band introduced itself that same year through the six-track Rain EP. Permanent Sleep, their initial full-length LP, arrived the next year. Ahead of the Diminuendo album in 1987 came the Vain Delights 12-inch, followed later that year by the Eternity Road 12-inch. The four-song Swirl, It Swings EP and From a Scream to a Whisper both appeared in 1988, the latter assembling highlights drawn from the band's earlier singles and albums. Releases continued into the mid-'90s with Godhead in 1989, San Antorium in 1991, and Gush in 1995. A modest reissue program undertaken by Nightshift in 1990 and 1991 brought most of the group's early material, previously available only on vinyl, to compact disc.
