The Blue Aeroplanes formed in Bristol, England, as an art rock ensemble whose wide-ranging approach and the compositional instincts of frontman Gerard Langley prompted frequent parallels with the Velvet Underground. At the outset the group’s nucleus comprised Langley’s sibling John behind the drums, guitarist Nick Jacobs, and multi-instrumentalist Dave Chapman. Beyond Langley himself, membership proved fluid, with both studio and stage lineups routinely expanded by a rotating roster of additional players. By the sessions for the 1991 release Beatsongs the configuration had settled around guitarists Angelo Bruschini and Rodney Allen, bassist Andy McCreeth, drummer Paul Mulreany, and guitarist-keyboardist Alex Lee, while eight further musicians received credit on the finished record. The band’s debut, Bop Art, appeared on Abstract Records in April 1984; shortly afterward they moved to Fire Records, where they issued Tolerance in October 1986, Spitting Out Miracles the following year, and a succession of EPs. Spitting Out Miracles marked their initial American issue, after which Fire assembled the 1988 compilation Friendloverplane—a double album domestically that Restless condensed to a single LP for the U.S. market. The group next joined the Ensign imprint of Chrysalis Records and reached the British charts with the 1989 singles “Jacket Hangs” and “…And Stones,” as well as the albums Swagger in 1990 and Beatsongs in 1991.
