Formed in Liverpool, England, during 1981, the Pale Fountains emerged as a leading force in the early-1980s “quiet pop” movement. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Michael Head fronted the ensemble, which also featured bassist Chris McCaffrey, drummer Thomas Whelan, and former Dislocation Dance trumpeter Andy Diagram. The band made its recorded debut in 1982 on the Operation Twilight label with the single “(There’s Always) Something on My Mind.” The track created enough excitement for Virgin to offer an immediate contract reportedly worth a then-unprecedented 150,000 pounds. Despite an expensive promotional campaign, however, the group’s lavishly produced Virgin single “Thank You” never reached the U.K. Top 40. After spending a concentrated year in the studio, the Pale Fountains released their first album, the bossa nova-inflected Pacific Street, in 1984. By then the extended absence from public view had eroded their earlier press favor, and the record met with modest sales. Ian Broudie was subsequently enlisted to produce the 1985 follow-up …from across the kitchen table, yet commercial breakthrough remained elusive. Mounting tensions between the musicians and their label soon led to the group’s dissolution, after which Head returned to Liverpool and formed Shack alongside his brother John.
