Microdisney, an Irish ensemble, drew its contradictory force from the divergent outlooks of frontmen vocalist Cathal Coughlan—a dark, brooding lyricist given to angst-ridden, incendiary wordplay—and guitarist Sean O'Hagan, a gifted composer of atmospheric, seductive pop fare. The band originated in Cork during 1980 and navigated multiple personnel shifts along with varying stylistic directions before locking in around the central pair of Coughlan and O'Hagan together with bassist Mick Lynch and drummer Rob Mackahey. Its earliest singles appeared in 1982, among them "Helicopter of the Holy Ghost," the initial entry in a series of tracks that confronted Coughlan’s fixation on the Irish Catholic church.

Coughlan and O’Hagan moved to London near the moment the group unveiled its debut album Everybody’s Fantastic, at which point they added bassist Ed Flesh and drummer Tom Fenner to the lineup. A 1984 collection of those early singles arrived under the title We Hate You South African Bastards! The 1985 release The Clock Comes Down the Stairs earned Microdisney both widespread critical praise and the support of influential DJ John Peel, leading to a Virgin Records deal whose first single, “Town to Town,” came close to the U.K. Top 50.

Crooked Mile, issued in 1987 and tracked with bassist Steve Pregnant plus keyboardist James Compton now aboard, preceded the single “Singer’s Hampstead Home,” a scathing indictment of labelmate and admitted heroin addict Boy George. Commercial prospects remained unchanged after 1988’s 39 Minutes, prompting Microdisney to disband. Coughlan channeled his ferocity into the Fatima Mansions while O’Hagan pursued his pop sensibilities by founding the Beach Boys-inspired High Llamas; he also collaborated regularly with Stereolab and Will Oldham’s ever-shifting Palace Music. Cathal Coughlan died on May 18, 2022 after a long illness; he was 61 years of age.
