Biography
Emerging from Liverpool, England, as a pop duo in 1980, they launched their career via the understated single “Young Man (Seeks An Interesting Job).” Additional independent releases appeared afterward, culminating in a surprising UK chart success in 1986 with “Driving Away From Home (Jim’s Tune)” and the album Life’s Hard And Then You Die, whose title became a lasting catchphrase. “Eds Funky Diner” and the peculiar “Space (He Called From The Kitchen)” came next, after which the pair stepped away from the spotlight for an extended period. John Campbell, formerly of Yachts, and Jarvis Whitehead resurfaced as the core duo in 1990, issuing another album on Siren Records. Their sound remained quietly restrained and carried a dry sense of humor reminiscent of an indie-styled Pet Shop Boys. Over the years the lineup also featured Henry Priestman of the Christians along with Paul Barlow on drums, Julian Scott on bass, Mick Dempsey on percussion, Brenda Airturo on percussion, Brenda Kenny on percussion, and Gillian Miller providing backing vocals.
