Biography
The rock pop band originated in Dublin, Eire during 1986 under the initial name Backwards Into Paradise. By 1988 the lineup had settled around Dave Long on vocals and guitar, James Eadie handling lead guitar and keyboards, Rachael Tighe on bass, and Ronan Clarke at the drums. Notice remained scarce before the early 1990 appearance of Under The Water. That unpredictable and misleading album earned widespread praise together with the expected warm media reaction. Dublin roots automatically triggered erroneous links to both U2 and the Hothouse Flowers. Some reviewers instead pointed to the many drink-themed songs and thereby located the group inside a sharper Irish lineage. Their next release, Churchtown, arrived on the new Ensign Records imprint and met with a distinctly curt response. The major-label association ultimately collapsed, returning Into Paradise to their original base at Setanta Records, which had by then found success with A House and Frank And Walters. In that more congenial setting Long kept working a deep creative seam, although his lyrics stayed sharp enough to keep major success at bay.
