Biography
Established in 1958, the ensemble pursues the exhibition and safeguarding of Swahili traditions. Originally called Shime Kuokoana, the name conveys an appeal to protect what stands on the brink of vanishing. Roughly two hundred individuals belong to the club, with about thirty-five taking part as musicians who treat the activity as a non-professional pursuit. Purely for personal satisfaction, these performers appear regularly at communal events, official state occasions, and ceremonial rites alike.
