Biography
Damita possesses a voice widely celebrated for its blend of empowerment and serenity, and she has devoted herself exclusively to creating music that carries an uplifting message. Born in Detroit, she spent her formative years immersed in song, whether performing informally at home or as part of the local church choir. Married to gospel artist Deitrick Haddon, she began her professional path by touring with the gospel theater production Mama Don't. She subsequently became a member of the female a cappella ensemble Adoration & Praise, which issued a single album during her tenure.
Damita has repeatedly cited her time on the road with the legendary Aretha Franklin, often called the original diva, as an enduring source of inspiration for her own musical journey. Four years after that first encounter, she partnered with her husband and the pioneering R&B producer Arif Mardin to deliver her self-titled debut album in the fall of 2000.
