Biography
Finding comfort in the landscapes of her imagination, singer and songwriter Dana Glover embodies a kindred spirit. Raised in North Carolina, she experienced frequent relocations throughout childhood, with her family settling in three separate suburbs by the time she reached her teenage years. Regular church attendance provided stability for Glover and her relatives, exposing her to the distinctive warmth of Southern gospel traditions and inspiring her later interest in the Winans and the Imperials. Although she attempted formal piano instruction, self-directed learning proved far more rewarding, and after taking up the saxophone she recognized music as her true vocation. During eighth grade she delivered a performance of “St. Elmo’s Fire” at a school talent show, after which she resolved to pursue music as a profession.
At sixteen Glover departed the South for New York City to launch a modeling career. Steady income and immersion in a vibrant cultural hub followed, yet she persisted in composing songs; the travel opportunities accelerated her maturity and ultimately enriched her writing. After two years she deemed the city sufficient, and at eighteen she rejoined her family in Nashville. Efforts to establish herself musically there proved unfruitful, prompting her and her brother to relocate to Los Angeles in a decisive step that would soon fulfill her ambitions.
Glover prepared an audition for DreamWorks under considerable strain, yet her anxiety ultimately worked to her advantage. Robbie Robertson, the former Band musician, songwriter, and DreamWorks affiliate, offered her a contract. Her vocals subsequently appeared on the soundtracks for Shrek and The Wedding Planner. In fall 2002 she released her debut album, Testimony.
