Colbie Caillat first broke through with the buoyant single “Bubbly,” a title that also suits the buoyant mood running through her songs. Raised in Southern California, where her father Ken had helmed the landmark Fleetwood Mac records Rumours and Tusk, she distilled the relaxed coastal atmosphere of her upbringing on the 2008 album Coco, which positioned her as a prominent adult-alternative artist. In the ensuing years she became a fixture on the AAA airwaves, joining Jason Mraz for the duet “Lucky” while “Fallin’ for You,” “I Never Told You,” “I Do,” “Brighter Than the Sun,” and “Try” each reached the adult-contemporary top ten. A full decade after Coco, she moved to independent status, issuing The Malibu Sessions in 2016 and the country-leaning Along the Way in 2023 on smaller labels.

Her early years unfolded in Malibu and Ventura County alongside her father, Ken Caillat. Tracks were routinely mixed on the console inside their Malibu beach house, sending the sounds of Billy Idol, Pat Benatar, and other eighties pop-rock staples echoing through the hallways. Piano lessons filled her childhood, yet real motivation arrived only at age eleven when Lauryn Hill’s performance in Sister Act 2 captivated her. Instantly deciding she wanted to sing, she began vocal training and soon crossed paths with producer Mikal Blue, whose prior clients included Five for Fighting and Carrie Underwood. Blue enlisted her for several techno numbers created for runway shows, and the pair developed an ongoing working partnership. At nineteen Caillat took up acoustic guitar, after which the two committed her first original composition to tape.

As their creative bond deepened, Jason Reeves joined the sessions and offered guidance that sharpened the emerging songwriter’s craft. Caillat supplied the core melodies—frequently writing in her bathroom to exploit its reverberant acoustics—then refined the results with input from both Blue and Reeves. Several finished pieces appeared on MySpace, yet they drew scant attention until she posted the breezy, hook-driven song “Bubbly.” Word spread rapidly, and daily visitors to her page climbed into the thousands; once her friend count reached 6,240, Rolling Stone named her among the platform’s leading female acts. For four months she held the top unsigned-artist ranking on MySpace, amassing more than fourteen million plays. That impressive metric quickly attracted major-label interest, and she signed with Universal Republic once her online following exceeded one hundred thousand.

Her major-label bow arrived in July 2007 with Coco, a summery set equally suited to coffeehouses and shorelines. “Bubbly” dominated multiple singles charts, converting an online phenomenon into a broad mainstream figure. Two further singles emerged as the album attained double-platinum certification; Caillat marked the milestone by duetting with Jason Mraz, touring alongside John Mayer, and teaming with Taylor Swift. Two years after Coco she delivered her sophomore effort, Breakthrough, which yielded another top-forty single in “Fallin’ for You.” The record earned gold status and was succeeded two years later by All of You, another collection of sunlit pop numbers crafted with Ryan Tedder, Toby Gad, and “Bubbly” co-writer Jason Reeves. “Brighter Than the Sun,” the album’s second single, became its strongest performer, topping Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart while reaching number 47 on the Hot 100. In fall 2012 she released the holiday album Christmas in the Sand, which peaked at number four on the Top Holiday Albums tally and number 41 on the Billboard 200.

Work on her subsequent project began in 2013, the first result being the November single “Hold On.” An EP titled Gypsy Heart: Side A arrived in June 2014 and, as the name implied, formed the opening half of the full-length Gypsy Heart, issued that September. Co-produced in part by Babyface, the set deliberately leaned toward brighter, radio-oriented fare. It debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200, and its leading single, “Try,” climbed to number six on the adult-contemporary chart.

Following Gypsy Heart, Caillat ended her association with Republic Records and launched her own imprint, PlummyLou, to release The Malibu Sessions. Recorded earlier yet previously shelved by Republic, the album restored her signature beach-inflected sound and surfaced in October 2016. She subsequently founded Blue Jean Baby to issue Along the Way, her 2023 contemporary-country album written largely in tandem with Liz Rose and A.J. Pruis.
