Biography
Amiable West Coast singer/songwriter Brett Dennen first attracted notice in 2004 via the single “Desert Sunrise.” Its relaxed groove and soulful phrasing generated sufficient radio airplay to prompt issuance of his self-titled debut the next year. Thoughtful, laid-back material placed Dennen alongside the rising singer/songwriter cohort that included Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, its warmly expressive and personally relatable lyrics forming a natural fit. Positive critical notice arrived first with 2008’s Hope for the Hopeless; touches of African music enriched 2013’s Smoke & Mirrors, while 2021’s See the World weighed personal and global themes in equal measure.
Brett Dennen entered the world in California’s Central Valley on October 28, 1979. Homeschooled by parents whose listening habits centered on Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and John Denver, he acquired guitar skills at summer camp by working through selections from the family record collection. At the University of California at Santa Cruz he pursued sociology and philosophy degrees, meanwhile composing and performing original songs with friends, although a brief stint in a jam band proved fleeting. Following his 2002 graduation he moved to Los Angeles to pursue music professionally. A single he recorded caught on with listeners at Santa Monica College’s influential public radio outlet KCRW-FM; buoyed by that response, he completed his self-titled debut, issued independently in 2005.
Dualtone signed him, resulting in 2006’s So Much More and, two years afterward, Hope for the Hopeless. Between headline tours he opened for Dave Matthews, Taj Mahal, Ziggy Marley, and Jackson Browne, among others. His fourth studio album, Loverboy, appeared in 2011, incorporating subtle African rhythms beneath a pop sheen. Atlantic released the sparser, acoustic-based Smoke and Mirrors in 2013; the project succeeded commercially, placing Dennen on the Billboard Top 200 for the first time. Prominent television placements also accrued, among them the theme song for NBC’s sitcom About a Boy. Fifth album Por Favor, produced by Dave Cobb and released in 2016, offered a rhythmic, stripped-down sound tinted with light reggae. For 2018’s five-song EP Let’s…, he partnered with hitmaking songwriter Dan Wilson, who served as producer. Dennen composed the material for 2021’s See the World amid extended self-reflection, weighing the satisfactions of a musician’s career against the strains of fatherhood while touring.
