Biography
Kate Voegele spent her formative years in Bay Village, Ohio, just beyond Cleveland, where she joined her church choir as a vocalist at the age of ten. Although her father regularly strummed guitar throughout her early years, she did not approach the instrument with serious commitment until high school. Motivated by a breakup during adolescence, she began composing pop/rock material and turned to her father for guidance, prompting him to capture her songs on tape. One of those recordings reached a Warner Bros. executive at a Michelle Branch concert, which in turn attracted interest from several major labels, notably Madonna’s Maverick Records.
The aspiring artist tracked a five-song EP titled The Other Side in 2003 under the guidance of producer Michael Seifert. Soon afterward she shared stages with John Mayer and Counting Crows, an exposure that opened further doors including an appearance at Farm Aid in Seattle, a slot in the Women in Rock showcase at South by Southwest, and multiple label showcases throughout Cleveland. In fall 2006, while still attending college, she signed with the newly formed MySpace Records, which issued her debut full-length album, Don't Look Away, the following spring.
Although she earned recognition from the New York Songwriter's Circle, broader attention remained elusive until 2008, when she joined the cast of the television series One Tree Hill in the recurring role of Mia Catalano, a rising solo songwriter. Her on-screen presence allowed her to spotlight her own recordings, which in turn lifted sales of Don't Look Away and prompted a reissue through Interscope Records. She continued on the program the next season while carving out time to complete her second album, A Fine Mess, released in May 2009. A parallel storyline on One Tree Hill depicted Mia Catalano issuing her own record, further aligning fiction with reality. A Fine Mess reached the Top Ten of the Billboard 200, a peak not matched by the 2011 follow-up Gravity Happens, whose opening track “Heart in Chains” was nonetheless performed on the series by Mia. After departing One Tree Hill in 2011, Voegele relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville and returned her focus to music, independently issuing the EP Wild Card in 2014.
