Hailing from New Jersey, Charlotte Sometimes entered the music scene not initially as a songwriter but through a lifelong commitment to performance. Her early years featured participation in dance and musical theater, leading her to take up the guitar at age 14, at which point she started crafting and sharing her original songs. Prior to completing high school and enrolling at the New School located in New York City's Greenwich Village, she had put out multiple self-produced EPs along with a live recording. The creation of her stage identity, Charlotte Sometimes, occurred while she attended college, drawing the name from Penelope Farmer's novel—the very work that also prompted the Cure to compose a track sharing that title. Following her contract with Geffen/Interscope, the 2008 issuance of her first full-length record, Waves & the Both of Us, marked her major-label debut.
