Biography
Tristan Prettyman, a onetime model for Quicksilver’s Roxy label and a singer/songwriter by trade, spent her formative years near San Diego. The coastal setting provided frequent opportunities to ride waves, an activity she pursued regularly during adolescence. Exposure to the sounds of Ani DiFranco, Joni Mitchell, and Jack Johnson sparked her interest in music, while an acoustic guitar once owned by her father offered a practical way to develop instrumental ability and craft original material. Between modeling assignments and time in the water, she began performing her unaccompanied songs at local gatherings and intimate clubs. A placement on the soundtrack for Chris Malloy’s 2001 surf documentary Shelter further established her emerging profile as a recording artist.
Momentum built when she shared bills with G. Love & Special Sauce and San Diego folk-popper Jason Mraz. In 2003 she recorded and issued the Love EP on her own, and the commercial breakthroughs achieved by Mraz and Jack Johnson soon attracted attention from major labels. She ultimately joined the roster of Virgin Records. Twentythree, her first full-length collection of acoustic folk-pop, arrived in August 2005 and included appearances by Mraz, guitarist Jesse Harris from Norah Jones’s band, and a roster of seasoned studio musicians. Hello...x surfaced in 2008 and expanded her sonic range through the addition of electric instruments and polished production values. Prettyman returned in 2012 with the reflective yet still electrified Cedar + Gold.
