Sara Bareilles projected a nostalgic quality upon unveiling her first album, Little Voice, in 2007. That sense of earlier times stemmed largely from her bold embrace of tuneful composition, evident in the breakout track "Love Song," which reframed traditional singer/songwriter elements for contemporary listeners. Her command of historical influences paired with an instinct for current tastes positioned her among the most prosperous and lasting figures in her field. Major successes accumulated across the late 2000s and 2010s, as "Love Song" climbed to number four, "King of Anything" reached 32 in 2010, and "Brave" climbed as high as 23 in 2013, while she also shifted focus to the stage by writing the score for the 2015 Broadway version of Adrienne Shelly’s Waitress. Theater became another natural domain, bringing a Tony nomination for the 2016 SpongeBob SquarePants production followed by her portrayal of Mary Magdalene in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, which yielded two Emmy nominations. She had by then secured a lasting place in entertainment, capturing a Grammy for "Saint Honesty" in 2019, shaping her catalog into the 2020 Apple TV+ series Little Voice, and receiving another Grammy for the 2022 Into the Woods revival on Broadway.

Raised in Eureka, California, Bareilles sang in choirs and took part in community productions from an early age, later studying piano at UCLA while pursuing a Communication Studies degree. Much of her free time went toward observing campus life and turning those impressions into poems and lyrics.

Once she completed her studies, Bareilles spent three years singing at open-mike nights, gradually strengthening her stage presence before moving on to clubs and festivals. She co-produced the demo Careful Confessions in 2003 and grew fascinated with studio craft, prompting her to seek a major-label contract that arrived with Epic Records in April 2005. Eric Rosse began guiding sessions the next February, and together they refined the arrangements over roughly a year; several tracks originated on Careful Confessions, while additional songs were shaped to strengthen the eventual debut. Little Voice, issued in July 2007, explored past relationships, self-doubt, and the challenge of following intuition, with "Love Song" propelling the project to Top Ten placements on both the single and album charts and ultimately moving more than three million copies.

The success of that record kept Bareilles on the road for two years, during which she issued the live set Between the Lines: Sara Bareilles Live at the Fillmore. Repeated performances encouraged fresh writing that leaned toward larger, livelier arrangements than those on Little Voice, resulting in Kaleidoscope Heart, her second Epic release in mid-2010. It entered the Billboard chart at number one and launched an intense touring schedule that extended into 2011, when she also joined The Sing-Off as a judge.

Once that series concluded in spring 2012, Bareilles recorded the Once Upon Another Time EP with fellow judge Ben Folds producing. She maintained a steady performance schedule while preparing her fourth album, The Blessed Unrest, which appeared in July 2013. Bolstered by "Brave," it debuted at number two on the Billboard Top 200 and later earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, with the single itself nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance.

After finishing that cycle, Bareilles concentrated on a memoir and on composing music for Diane Paulus’ Broadway adaptation of Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film Waitress. Both projects reached audiences in fall 2015: the book Sounds Like Me in October and the companion recording What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress in November. Her connection to the musical continued into 2017, when she made her Broadway debut as Jenna Hunterson for a ten-week run, then returned to the role in 2018 before taking the part of Mary Magdalene in the television presentation Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! That appearance brought an Emmy nomination, and the soundtrack later received a Grammy nod.

Bareilles resumed her recording career in 2019 with the sixth studio album Amidst the Chaos, which included contributions from Lori McKenna and production by T-Bone Burnett and peaked at number six on the U.S. chart. The following year she earned her first Grammy for Best American Roots Performance with "Saint Honesty," a song introduced during a Saturday Night Live appearance. The 2020 Apple TV+ series Little Voice drew its title and several songs from her catalog, after which she released her own interpretations as More Love: Songs from Little Voice, Season One. In 2021 she issued the concert document Amidst the Chaos: Live from the Hollywood Bowl, captured at the Los Angeles venue the previous November. The next year she joined the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods and subsequently won a Grammy for the cast album.
