Biography
Ellie Goulding, the British vocalist, has carved out a distinctive position at the vanguard of thoughtful mainstream pop, much in the manner of earlier figures Kate Bush and Imogen Heap. Her singular soprano and skill at composing infectious yet heartfelt material quickly carried her to the peak of the U.K. charts via her 2010 debut album Lights. Her folk-rooted pop gradually absorbed electronic textures, as displayed on the dubstep-tinged Halcyon of 2012, before exploring dance and ambient synth pop territory on her third studio effort, Delirium, which surfaced in 2015. In 2020 she claimed her third U.K. number one with the contemplative Brightest Blue. She broadened her palette still further by issuing the seasonal EP Songbook for Christmas that year, then shifted back toward the dancefloor via the euphoric synth textures of 2023’s Higher than Heaven.
Born in Hereford, England, Goulding eventually moved to the east coast to pursue drama at the University of Kent. A teenage passion for folk music had already taken hold, and her university years also introduced her to electronica. After two years she interrupted her studies and settled in West London, where she launched an alternative singer-songwriter career and connected with producers such as Starsmith and Frankmusik, who applied an electro-pop sheen to her songs. Beginning in 2009 she assembled an online audience by posting early tracks including “Starry Eyed” and a cover of Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold” on influential websites. She soon moved beyond the blogosphere into mainstream print coverage, earning favorable notices from publications such as The Guardian while fielding offers from major labels. She ultimately signed with Polydor Records and began work on her debut album while also writing material for Diana Vickers, Gabriella Climi, and additional artists.
In the closing weeks of 2009, Goulding claimed the top spot in the BBC’s Sound of 2010 poll, an annual survey of emerging talent conducted by British critics and industry figures. Capitalizing on that exposure, she merged acoustic and electronic instrumentation on her first full-length studio album, Lights, issued in March 2010. The record debuted at number one in the U.K. and yielded the Top Five single “Starry Eyed,” which also performed strongly in Ireland and New Zealand. Later that year a reissue appeared under the title Bright Lights. In addition to a successful cover of Elton John’s “Your Song,” the expanded set contained the international hit “Lights,” certified five times platinum in the U.S. and reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
Goulding returned in 2012 with her second album, Halcyon, which ventured into bolder sonic territory through darker lyrics and experimental electronic production. Featuring the single “Anything Can Happen,” it became her second consecutive U.K. chart-topper and introduced her to the U.S. Top Ten. The following year a deluxe edition added ten new tracks and appeared under the name Halcyon Days, functioning as an extension of the original. Two songs from that package, the U.K. number-one “Burn” and the Top Three single “How Long Will I Love You,” ranked among her most successful releases. She simultaneously scored an international hit with Calvin Harris’ “I Need Your Love,” later certified multi-platinum in the U.S., Australia, and Canada, while another Harris collaboration, “Outside,” sustained her presence on worldwide charts.
By 2014 Goulding had joined Band Aid 30’s re-recording of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” and returned to the U.K. Top Ten with “Beating Heart,” featured on the Divergent soundtrack. A further soundtrack cut, “Love Me Like You Do,” bolstered the profile of Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015 and reached number one in numerous territories.
That year she released her third studio album, Delirium, which included contributions from Max Martin, Greg Kurstin, and additional writers. The pop-oriented project spawned the single “On My Mind” and reached number three on both the U.S. and U.K. charts. Throughout the rest of the decade she accumulated several major successes through collaborations, beginning with 2017’s “First Time” alongside electronic producer Kygo. In 2018 the radio hit “Close to Me” united her with producer Diplo and rapper Swae Lee. In 2019 she appeared on Clean Bandit’s “Mama” and Juice WRLD’s “Hate Me,” then issued her own solo singles “Flux” and “Sixteen.”
Goulding opened the 2020s with “Worry About Me,” a collaboration with American singer Blackbear, and “Slow Grenade” with Lauv. Both tracks featured on her fourth album, Brightest Blue, which arrived that summer. Divided into two halves, the first portion highlighted more experimental and introspective selections such as “Power,” which interpolated Dua Lipa’s “Be the One,” and the piano-driven “Flux,” while the second half, labeled “EG.0,” presented more accessible material including her earlier singles with Blackbear, Lauv, Diplo, and Juice WRLD. The set marked her third U.K. number one. Later that year she embraced the holiday season with the EP Songbook for Christmas, offering stripped-back interpretations of standards including “O Holy Night,” Don McLean’s “Vincent,” and Elton John’s “Your Song.” In July 2022 she released “Easy Lover,” a collaboration with rapper Big Sean that previewed her next phase. Another pairing reunited her with Calvin Harris for the first time since 2014 on the chart-topping track “Miracle.”
Responding to the somber atmosphere of the COVID-19 pandemic’s early months, Goulding stayed on the dancefloor, seeking renewal through luminous, neon-infused synth pop for her fifth album. Issued in early 2023, Higher than Heaven included the singles “Let It Die” and the bonus track “All by Myself” with Alok and Sigala.
