After earning an Academy Award nomination for her first major screen performance in the Coen Brothers' 2010 Western True Grit, Hailee Steinfeld devoted the rest of the decade to sustaining her film work while developing a parallel path as a pop artist. Her part in the 2015 musical Pitch Perfect 2 arrived at the same moment as her initial EP, Haiz, which rose to number 57 on the Billboard 200. A string of guest features, soundtrack cuts, and standalone releases then led to the 2020 EP Half Written Story and later singles that included 2022's "Coast" featuring Anderson .Paak and 2023's "Sunkissing."

Steinfeld entered the world in Tarzana, California, and grew up in Thousand Oaks. As a child she appeared in television commercials, episodic series, and short films, all before making her feature debut in True Grit. At only 13, the performance drew strong critical praise and secured her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The same recognition quickly opened doors to roles alongside Harrison Ford, Jessica Alba, Kristen Wiig, Anna Kendrick, and Kevin Costner while she remained a teenager.

During 2015 she joined the video for Taylor Swift's number one hit "Bad Blood" and contributed to an acoustic take of Shawn Mendes' hit "Stitches." That summer her own buoyant single "Love Myself" entered the Hot 100, where it also gained traction through streaming and radio play. Her debut EP, Haiz, followed in November 2015, landing in the upper half of the Billboard 200 while also charting in Canada and Japan. The next July she issued "Starving," a team-up with the EDM duo Grey and producer Zedd that reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2017 she offered the solo track "Most Girls" and joined Alesso, Florida Georgia Line, and Andrew Watt on "Let Me Go." The year after, she collaborated with BloodPop on "Capital Letters," which appeared on the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack. In 2019 she assumed the lead role of poet Emily Dickinson in the series Dickinson and released the accompanying song "After Life."

The singles "Wrong Direction" and "I Love You's" introduced her second LP, Half Written Story, which surfaced in May 2020. She next entered the Marvel universe by headlining Disney's 2021 series Hawkeye. Steinfeld resumed her music career in 2022 with the Anderson .Paak collaboration "Coast," then delivered the bright summertime single "Sunkissing" in early 2023.
