Bishop Briggs crafts dark, rock-infused pop from her base in Los Angeles. After issuing two EPs in the closing years of the 2010s, she delivered her first official studio album, the Billboard 200-charting Church of Scars, in 2018. The following year’s Champion, a breakup record, contained the title track recorded with Tom Morello. Subsequent solo releases included a 2020 cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and the 2021 single “Someone Else” that featured Jacob Banks. Wider recognition arrived in 2023 when she claimed the season-nine title of The Masked Singer and issued her third EP, When Everything Went Dark.

Sarah Grace McLaughlin entered the world in London in 1992 to Scottish parents, completed her schooling in Tokyo and Hong Kong, and moved to Los Angeles after finishing secondary education. A performance at a local venue drew the notice of producers Mark Jackson and Ian Scott—the team also behind indie rock act DOROTHY—leading to her debut single, “Wild Horses.” The track secured placement in an Acura commercial and quickly spread online. Early 2016 brought “River,” a piece that merged trip-hop textures with acoustic guitar, electronic rhythms, and pronounced soul, climbing multiple streaming and social charts.

Those initial successes translated into high-profile opportunities; by autumn 2016 she was supporting Coldplay and Kaleo on tour and making her first television appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The reissued “Wild Horses” registered on U.S. charts and later appeared on her self-titled debut EP in early 2017. “White Flag” arrived in March 2018, and all of the preceding singles were collected on Church of Scars, released that April; the album reached the Billboard 200’s upper thirty and climbed to number five on the Top Rock and Alternative Albums tally.

A painful separation prompted Briggs to begin work on Champion almost immediately, yielding a 2019 collection of cathartic anthems that featured the singles “Champion” with Tom Morello and “Jekyll & Hide.” In 2020 she released the soaring track “Higher” and her Queen cover; the following year she teamed with Jacob Banks on “Someone Else.” May 2023 saw her launch a co-headlining tour with MisterWives, after which she won season nine of The Masked Singer while performing as “Medusa.” Shortly afterward she issued When Everything Went Dark, an EP that included “Baggage” and “Superhuman.”
