Biography
Ruelle crafts stirring atmospheric ballads as an expressive pop artist, whether anchored by somber piano alone or expanded into elaborate productions driven by crashing drums and theatrical strings, and these tracks have appeared in dozens of dramatic television series plus film trailers. Born Maggie Eckford, the singer and songwriter issued a pair of indie pop albums during the early 2010s under her given name before discovering her cinematic direction through both licensed tracks and material composed specifically for visual media. Her initial placements arrived shortly before the 2015 release of her debut EP Up in Flames, with “Until We Go Down” surfacing in Sleepy Hollow, The Shannara Chronicles, Wynonna Earp and multiple additional series along with reality competition programs. Largely because of placements on Shadowhunters with “Fire Meets Fate” and on Grey’s Anatomy with “Carry You,” Ruelle earned recognition as Tunefind’s Top Artist of 2018. Later projects encompass the EPs Earth Glow and Exodus, both from 2019, Somebody Else from 2022, and singles including “Yes We Can” in 2023 and “Conquer” in 2024.
Raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Maggie Eckford launched her recording career with the indie pop albums For What It’s Worth in 2010 and Show and Tell in 2012. Following the second of those releases she moved to Nashville to advance her songwriting work. Drawing on her longstanding affinity for musicals and movies that informed her formative listening and training, Eckford shifted focus toward ballads marked by dramatic cinematic qualities. In 2014 the songs “Up in Flames” and “Fear on Fire” appeared in episodes of Reckless and Revenge. Early the next year she issued her first EP as Ruelle, titled Up in Flames, which contained those two tracks together with “War of Hearts” and “Until We Go Down,” a combination that eventually amassed well over a dozen placements across series such as Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, Sleepy Hollow, The Shannara Chronicles, Wynonna Earp and both the U.S. and U.K. editions of Love Island. As further syncs accumulated she issued the EPs Madness, Rival and Emerge in successive years. Ruelle ranked number two on Tunefind’s Top Artist list for 2017 and reached the top spot in 2018, propelled by the Shadowhunters placement of “Fire Meets Fate” and the Grey’s Anatomy airing of “Carry You,” which also featured that year on The Resident, Famous in Love and Charmed. After her most successful year to date, she assembled Ode to Shadows on CD in 2019, collecting earlier highlights such as “War of Hearts,” “Carry You,” “I Get to Love You” and “Monsters,” the last of which had first surfaced on Scream: Music from Season One, while also releasing the EPs Earth Glow, spotlighting “Like You Mean It,” and Exodus, spotlighting “The Fear of Letting Go.” Activity slowed to a handful of new singles in 2020 and 2021, yet earlier recordings, particularly “Carry You,” maintained her near-constant presence on television. Her seventh EP, Somebody Else, arrived in 2022, followed over the ensuing two years by additional singles such as “Yes We Can,” “How to Save a Life” and “Conquer.”
