Emerging from New York under a veil of mystery, chillwave outfit MS MR drew early notice via the irresistible 2012 release “Hurricane,” a brooding yet lushly tuneful lament on lost love that merged the frosty edge of Phantogram and Bat for Lashes with the sweeping polish of Adele and Florence + the Machine. The pair initially operated in secrecy until vocalist Lizzy Plapinger—co-founder of the pop label Neon Gold—and producer Max Hershenow were identified. They secured a Sony contract soon after “Hurricane” circulated widely online, resulting in the September 2012 arrival of the Candy Bar Creep Show EP through IAMSOUND. “Fantasy” followed in early 2013, several months ahead of the group’s first album, Secondhand Rapture, which surfaced that May. Hershenow and Plapinger later joined forces with Tove Lo and MNDR for the next project; How Does It Feel, containing the single “Painted,” appeared in July 2015.
