Biography
Sofi Tukker, the American duo, generates pulsating jungle pop steeped in '90s house textures, securing a Grammy nomination for their inaugural release, the 2016 track "Drinkee." Frequently delivering material in Portuguese, the pair unveiled their first full-length effort, Treehouse, in 2018, earning another Grammy nod in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category. A consistent flow of singles followed into the 2020s, highlighted by prominent team-ups with Icona Pop, Gorgon City, Amadou & Mariam, and Lady Gaga. Their buoyant second album, Wet Tennis, surfaced in 2022, succeeded a year later by the sultry single "Jacaré" ahead of the 2024 LP Bread.
Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern connected while studying at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Shortly afterward the independent artists united to create "Drinkee," their earliest composition, which achieved global success. Lyrics drawn from a Brazilian poem and performed in Portuguese, the tongue Hawley-Weld had learned at college, broadened its international reach. After amassing tens of millions of streams and registering on charts in multiple territories, the song captured a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording and appeared on the duo's 2016 debut EP, Soft Animals.
Tukker followed the next year with the collaborative single "Best Friend," joined by Nervo, the Knocks, and Japanese vocalist Alisa Ueno. Exposure in a smartphone commercial propelled the track onto dance charts in Belgium and the Netherlands and onto the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent French-charting singles "That's It (I'm Crazy)" and "Batshit" preceded the latter's inclusion on the 2018 debut album Treehouse. Issued by Ultra Records, the set also charted in Canada and reached number 14 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. Further 2018 pairings arrived via "Energia [Parte 2]" with Pabllo Vittar and "Brazilian Soul" with the Knocks, while early 2019 brought the ZHU-assisted "Mi Rumba." Treehouse meanwhile earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Additional singles and remixes kept the duo active on dancefloors, among them "Purple Hat," the Gorgon City electronic anthem "House Arrest," the 2020 Icona Pop collaboration "Spa," and a remix of Lady Gaga's "911."
The following year they linked with African duo Amadou & Mariam for "Mon Cheri" and with John Summit for "Sun Came Up," both of which featured on the second studio album Wet Tennis alongside contributions from Turkish producer Mahmut Orhan and Halpern's father. After appearing on the Deadmau5 and Kaskade project Kx5, Sofi Tukker issued their own Brazilian-inspired single "Jacaré" in 2023. The track formed part of Bread, their third LP released in 2024, which also contained the singles "Throw Some Ass" and the yearning "Hey Homie."
