Biography
Norwegian electronic duo Lemaitre, headquartered in Los Angeles, weaves fluid tracks that fuse electro house, French house, nu disco, and indietronica. Worldwide notice arrived in the early 2010s via the Relativity 1-3 EP series, after which the pair signed with Astralwerks mid-decade. Their breakthrough single “Closer,” featuring Jennie A., later appeared on the 2017 album Chapter One, a collection drawn from prior EP highlights. A true debut of fresh material arrived with 2021’s Substellar, after which the duo initiated a fresh EP sequence that opened with 2024’s RED and continued with its counterpart BLUE.
Longtime friends Ketil Jansen and Ulrik Denizou Lund formed the project in 2010 and borrowed its name from Belgian priest Georges Lemaître, originator of the Big Bang theory—an apt nod for music that stretches from electro-house to infectious pop grooves situated between Daft Punk and Phoenix. Blending electronics, live instrumentation, and prominent vocals, they issued their debut EP The Friendly Sound that same year. Relativity 1 and Relativity 2 followed in 2012, with the latter topping both the U.S. and Canadian digital electronic albums charts. Relativity 3 and the remix set Relativity by Nite appeared in 2013.
Early 2014 brought news of the Astralwerks signing and the release of the dance-focused Singularity EP, which included hip-hop producer Chuck Inglish. The 1749 EP surfaced in early 2016, logging one week on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart thanks to the buzzing single “Closer.” Later that year the duo released the Afterglow EP. Chapter One arrived in 2017, compiling earlier material and spotlighting the track “Higher.” Six-track EP Fast Lovers emerged in early 2019 as the pair prepared a full-length of original songs.
Substellar, released in 2021, marked Lemaitre’s first proper album of new material and featured vocalists Anna of the North, Sofiloud, and RebMoe. A deluxe edition followed in 2022 with extra tracks and remixes. In 2024 the duo launched another EP series with RED, succeeded later that year by BLUE.
