Biography
Having first honed her skills alongside the British electronic outfit Rudimental, Anne-Marie stepped out on her own with a polished blend of pop, grime, and R&B. Her first full-length effort, Speak Your Mind, surfaced in 2018, climbing to number three on the U.K. Albums chart and securing four Brit Award nominations. Therapy arrived in 2021 as both her second studio album and major-label debut, reaching number two in the U.K. while she took on a coaching role for the seventh season of The Voice UK. The following year she reentered the U.K. Top 20 with “Psycho” featuring Aitch, the opening single from her 2023 album Unhealthy.
Born Anne-Marie Nicholson in Essex, England, the vocalist had already accumulated stage experience by the time her debut EP appeared in 2015, having performed at age 12 opposite Jessie J in a West End staging of Whistle Down the Wind. She also tried out for Les Misérables without informing her parents and received an offer, a gamble that ultimately convinced them of her vocal talent. Between those early theater appearances and her emergence as a pop artist, she captured the world karate championship on three separate occasions, an achievement she later linked to the discipline and focus that later supported her music career.
A chance encounter with an up-and-coming singer/songwriter led Anne-Marie to recording sessions at Elton John’s Rocket Studios; impressed by her ability, the team at Rocket Music signed her. The 2013 demo Summer Girl attracted early notice, including interest from Ed Sheeran, though her solo path was deliberately paused to allow further artistic growth.
Guest spots on recordings by Magnetic Man, Gorgon City, and Raized by Wolves brought Anne-Marie to the attention of Rudimental. She appeared with Dizzee Rascal and Will Heard on two tracks from the band’s 2015 album We the Generation and spent two years touring with them across major venues and festivals worldwide. In July 2015 she issued her debut EP, Karate, on Rudimental’s newly launched Major Tom’s label; the three-song set included a Chloe Martini remix and featured production from Josh Record and Two Inch Punch. Positive reviews for the lead track “Karate,” an electro-grime and R&B hybrid, and its follow-up “Gemini” paved the way for solo gigs. Early 2016 saw “Do It Right” chart in the U.K., followed months later by “Alarm,” which entered the Top 40 in several international territories.
A featured role on Clean Bandit’s multi-platinum “Rockabye” with Sean Paul delivered a major hit in 2017, topping charts throughout Europe and Australia while reaching the Top Ten in Canada and the U.S. She continued with the solo releases “Ciao Adios” and “Heavy,” both of which charted in the U.K. and Ireland and appeared on her April 2018 debut album Speak Your Mind. That project hit number three in the U.K. and entered the Top 40 of the Billboard 200, earning four Brit Award nominations including Album of the Year. Among its tracks was “Friends,” co-written and recorded with Marshmello; as the song climbed global charts and achieved platinum status in multiple markets, she released the album single “2002,” a reinterpretation of “Rewrite the Stars” from The Greatest Showman, plus the Lauv collaboration “Fuck, I’m Lonely.” The standalone single “Birthday” followed in February 2020, with “Her” and “To Be Young” featuring Doja Cat arriving later that year.
“Don’t Play” with KSI and Digital Farm Animals and “Our Song” with Niall Horan both surfaced in early 2021 and featured on her sophomore album Therapy, released later that year on Asylum; it peaked at number two on the U.K. Albums chart. Shortly afterward she joined The Voice UK as a coach for its seventh season. Additional 2022 releases included “I Just Called” with Neiked and Latto, along with the U.K. Top 20 hit “Psycho” featuring Aitch, which also served as the first single from her third album Unhealthy. Further tracks such as “SAD B!TCH” and the title song with Shania Twain preceded the July 2023 release.
