Biography
British DJ, producer, and songwriter Guy James Robin, performing as Jonas Blue, has built a reputation for electronic dance and tropical house productions marked by infectious pop hooks. His breakthrough arrived via the 2015 cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” featuring Dakota, a worldwide success that reached the summit of both the U.K. and Billboard dance charts. Additional U.K. Top 20 entries soon followed, among them “Perfect Strangers” with JP Cooper, “Rise” featuring Jack & Jack, and “Mama” featuring William Singe, all of which set the stage for his 2018 debut album, Blue. Subsequent chart activity has included collaborations such as “Younger” with HRVY, “Mistakes” with Paloma Faith, and “Don’t Wake Me Up” with Why Don’t We, while the buoyant 2024 single “Mountains” united him with Galantis and Zoe Wees.
Born in 1989 in Chelmsford, Essex, England, Blue began making music near the age of seven, taking up the flute and saxophone. During his teenage years he gravitated toward electronic dance music and started experimenting with DJing, production, and remixing. Industry notice first came through his fresh take on Tracy Chapman’s 1988 hit “Fast Car.” By overlaying a tropical house atmosphere onto the original’s wistful, acoustic melancholy, Blue enlisted young British vocalist Dakota, whose alluring delivery propelled the track to number one on seventeen international charts, encompassing Australia, Scotland, and the U.K. and U.S. dance listings. In 2016 he issued “Perfect Strangers,” the successor to that global phenomenon, which showcased JP Cooper’s vocals and secured a Top Ten berth in multiple territories before giving way to “By Your Side” with Raye. The next year brought “Mama,” his partnership with Australian pop singer William Singe; the song later surfaced on Electronic Nature: The Mix 2017, a collection drawn from Blue’s own live sets that also spotlighted his remixes of material by Galantis, Zedd, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, and others.
During 2018 Blue unveiled the upbeat house-pop single “Rise,” a joint effort with Nebraskan Vine stars and pop duo Jack & Jack. That track, together with most of his earlier singles, was assembled into the full-length project Blue, released in November of the same year. Early 2019 saw the non-album release “What I Like About You” featuring Theresa Rex, after which he continued issuing standalone singles, including the Tiësto and Rita Ora collaboration “Ritual” and “Younger” with HRVY. The following year he paired with Paloma Faith on “Mistakes” and with MAX on “Naked,” then delivered the compilation Est. 1989. In 2021 the EP Cyan appeared, highlighting joint tracks with EDX, Alex Mills, Mark Villa, and additional contributors. Returning to the U.K. and Billboard dance Top 30 in 2022, Blue issued “Wake Me Up” alongside Why Don’t We, along with “Perfect Melody” featuring Julian Perretta and “Always Be There” with Louisa Johnson. He capped the recent period with the euphoric 2024 release “Mountains” uniting Galantis and Zoe Wees.
