Biography
Fifth Harmony emerged in 2012 as an all-female contemporary R&B vocal ensemble during their appearance on the second season of Fox’s The X Factor. The original roster brought together Normani Kordei Hamilton, Lauren Jauregui, Allyson Brooke Hernandez, Dinah Jane Hansen, and Camila Cabello, each of whom had auditioned independently as soloists. Judge Simon Cowell subsequently grouped them together for the “groups” category, where they placed third behind Carly Rose Sonenclar and eventual winner Tate Stevens.
After the program ended, the quintet secured recording contracts with Epic Records in the U.S. and Syco Records in Britain. Their first full-length studio album, Reflection, appeared in 2015 and featured the singles “Bo$$,” “Sledgehammer,” and “Worth It.” The set entered the U.S. Billboard 200 at number five and was later certified gold. Also that year the group launched its first headlining tour.
The following year they delivered their second studio album, 7/27, whose title commemorates the date the members were officially assembled on The X Factor. Production credits included DallasK, Stargate, Kygo, and several other leading hitmakers. Propelled by “The Life” and “Work from Home” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, the album debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Months afterward Cabello released her own single “Bad Things,” a duet with Machine Gun Kelly that reached the Top Ten of the Billboard singles chart in December 2016. Shortly after that success she announced her exit from the group to pursue a solo career.
In summer 2017 the remaining quartet returned with “Down” featuring rapper Gucci Mane. The track was included on their third studio album and first without Cabello, titled Fifth Harmony. Among its other selections was the Skrillex- and Poo Bear-produced single “Angel,” along with contributions from Ammo, DallasK, the Monsters & Strangerz, and additional producers.
