Biography
Dinah Jane first rose to prominence as one of the founding members of Fifth Harmony, the all-female pop outfit assembled during the 2011 season of The X Factor. Emerging from the program as breakout talents with her bandmates, the group went on to release three albums that landed inside the Billboard 200’s upper tier, beginning with Reflection in 2015, while also generating singles such as “Worth It” and “Work from Home.” Her solo career commenced in 2018 with the track “Bottled Up.”
She entered the world in Santa Ana, California, in 1997 as Dinah Jane Milika Ilaisaane Hansen Amasio and was raised in a large Polynesian family. Drawn to performing from childhood, she made one of her earliest professional appearances at age seven by singing the National Anthem. At fifteen she auditioned successfully for season two of Fox’s The X Factor with Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy.” Though eliminated during boot camp, the judges brought her back to join Ally Brooke, Normani, Lauren Jauregui, and Camila Cabello in forming Fifth Harmony. The five finished the competition in third place and signed with Syco Music/Epic, which released their 2013 debut EP Better Together.
As part of Fifth Harmony, Jane shared in the chart accomplishments of the group’s opening two albums, 2015’s Reflection and 2016’s 7/27, both of which reached the Billboard 200’s Top Five and produced the respective hits “Worth It” and “Work from Home.” After Cabello departed in 2016, the remaining members issued their third studio album, the self-titled Fifth Harmony, in 2017; led by the single “Down,” it debuted at number four on the Billboard 200.
That same year Jane appeared on RedOne’s “Boom Boom,” which also featured Daddy Yankee and French Montana. In May 2018 Fifth Harmony entered an indefinite hiatus so the members could focus on individual projects. Jane signed with L.A. Reid’s Hitco label and delivered her debut solo single “Bottled Up,” featuring Marc E. Bassy and Ty Dolla $ign. A follow-up single, “Retrograde,” arrived in June 2019.
