Kentucky-based singer-songwriter Daniel Martin Moore landed a record deal after Sub Pop Records received an unsolicited demo he sent on impulse. A native of Cold Spring, he mailed his home recordings to the label in January 2007, leading to the appearance of his debut full-length on the imprint the following year. Co-producer Joe Chiccarelli, along with violinist Petra Haden, upright bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and vocalist Jesca Hoop, contributed to the sessions for 2008’s Stray Age. Moore sustained the spirit of collaboration the next year by partnering with cellist Ben Sollee, who had previously performed with Abigail Washburn in Sparrow Quartet. The two wrote material inspired by the American South, after which fellow Kentucky native and My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James joined the project as producer. The resulting album, Dear Companion, came out in 2010 under both artists’ names. Moore’s second solo release, the gospel-influenced In the Cool of the Day, followed in early 2011. In 2012 he issued Farthest Field, a collaboration with Louisville-based singer-songwriter Joan Shelley, and followed that in 2013 with Archives, Vol. 1, a set of unreleased recordings, rare tracks, and joint performances. Early in 2015 Moore engineered Shelley’s Over and Even, and later that year Sofa Burn Records released his Golden Age, on which he again worked with Jim James. Moore returned in 2017 with Turned Over to Dreams, an album centered on lullabies and themes of sleep and wakefulness.
