Although Danielle Ponder is widely recognized first and foremost as a soul singer, her adaptable style incorporates elements of gospel, trip-hop, blues, R&B, and alt rock. The Rochester, New York native worked as a public defender for years while performing music only part-time, before committing fully to a recording career in the late 2010s. This uncommon route ultimately helped her cultivate a distinctive voice marked by both emotional weight and authority. Once she joined the Future Classic roster, she issued her first album, Some of Us Are Brave, in 2022.

Raised in a household steeped in music, Ponder chose instead to study law after her brother was sentenced to twenty years under New York’s “three strikes” statute. Following graduation she served as a public defender and later as a diversity and inclusion officer in her hometown. Throughout this period she kept writing songs, performing with bands, and occasionally touring. By 2018 the competing demands proved unsustainable, prompting her to leave law behind and focus exclusively on music. Alongside keyboardist Avis Reese and producer Dave Drago she began shaping the material that secured her contract with the Australian imprint Future Classic. Her initial release was the 2020 single “Look Around,” recorded with Melbourne’s Karate Boogaloo. Two years afterward she delivered her debut full-length, the dynamic Some of Us Are Brave.
