Biography
Hailing from England yet now based in Los Angeles, the singer/songwriter Jade Bird delivers a supple, commanding vocal style that fuses folk, pop, and rustic Americana into an appealing whole. She joined the roster of the influential indie label Glassnote Records while still a teenager, and the imprint issued her debut album in 2019, a release that topped the relevant charts. Teaming with Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, she unveiled the follow-up Different Kinds of Light in 2021. Her work later appeared on the soundtrack for the 2023 Netflix film NYAD, after which she collaborated with Mura Masa on the 2024 track “Burn the Hard Drive.”
Songwriting drew her attention early, prompting her to play shows across England as a teenager before she moved to London at sixteen to sharpen her stage skills and dive into the city’s folk community. A live YouTube clip of her song “Madeline” sparked a Glassnote contract that yielded the 2017 EP Something American. That year she also toured the U.S. with Americana singer Brent Cobb. The bright, hooky single “Lottery” surfaced in January 2018 and reached the top of Billboard’s Triple A chart. “Uh Huh” and “I Get No Joy” followed with similar results and later appeared on her self-titled full-length debut, released in April 2019, which led the U.K. Americana chart and climbed to number ten on the pop chart. After its arrival she became a protégé of Jason Isbell, Sheryl Crow, and Brandi Carlile. Following her contribution to Cobb’s “Feet off the Ground,” she issued the 2020 singles “Headstart” and “Houdini,” both of which landed on her sophomore album, 2021’s Different Kinds of Light. Penned in Japan, Mexico, Nashville, and upstate New York, the set was tracked with Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb—cousin of Brent—and peaked at number 27 on the U.K. Albums chart. Over the next two years her output consisted chiefly of scattered singles, including “Find a Way,” co-written with Linda Perry for the 2023 film NYAD. Early the following year she joined U.K. producer Mura Masa for the collaborative single “Burn the Hard Drive.”
