Originating in Purcell, Oklahoma, Parker Millsap channels an independent spirit into his Americana approach. His output shifted from the lean acoustic textures of his initial recordings in the early 2010s toward the more layered architecture of the 2018 album Other Arrangements, and he kept refining those sonic dimensions as the new decade began. The fifth full-length, Be Here Instead, arrived in 2021 after being tracked live in the studio with an entire ensemble; for the 2023 release Wilderness Within You he merged acoustic and electronic instrumentation.

During his formative years Millsap divided his time between performing hymns at the local Pentecostal church and absorbing vintage blues LPs, elements that joined folk, country, and Elvis-inflected rock & roll in shaping his distinctive voice. Still a teenager, he cut his largely acoustic debut Palisade alongside childhood friend Michael Rose on double bass. His self-titled second album followed in 2014, establishing the core style that earned widespread attention and earned him opening slots alongside Jason Isbell, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Lake Street Dive. Southern gothic storytelling grew more pronounced on the third album, The Very Last Day, which appeared in early 2016. In 2017 he issued Luck Mansion Sessions through Third Man Records, a joint project with Grammy Award-winning folk artist Sarah Jarosz. Other Arrangements marked a modest change in direction, emphasizing rock, power pop, and soul over earlier gospel and folk leanings. Be Here Instead retained that ensemble approach and was recorded live by producer and engineer John Agnello, known for work with Waxahatchee and J Mascis. Wilderness Within You incorporated both acoustic and electronic sounds, with Gillian Welch contributing vocals to the title track.
