North Carolina's American Aquarium blend twang, grit, and straight-ahead rock & roll in their alt-country approach. Their moniker, taken from a Wilco lyric, follows the path set by Whiskeytown and the Drive-By Truckers while introducing a distinct sonic identity and perspective. Centered on frontman B.J. Barham's songwriting, the band issued four albums and maintained a heavy touring pace before achieving broader recognition through the 2012 release Burn.Flicker.Die. Barham has repeatedly reshaped the roster across the years and adopted a more overtly political stance on subsequent efforts such as the poetic, Shooter Jennings-produced Lamentations in 2020. Following the 2021 covers collection Slappers, Bangers, and Certified Twangers, the group resumed original material with the focused Chicamacomico in 2022. Two years afterward they rejoined Jennings to emphasize their louder, more energetic side on The Fear of Standing Still.

Barham assembled American Aquarium in Raleigh, North Carolina, during 2006, serving as its singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter. The initial configuration included pianist Zack Brown, bassist Bill Corbin, guitarist Ryan Johnson, drummer Kevin McClain, and pedal steel player Whit Wright. Even while maintaining frequent road work, the musicians entered studios consistently, issuing the independent albums Antique Hearts in 2006 and The Bible and the Bottle in 2008 prior to linking with Last Chance Records for Dances for the Lonely in 2009. North Carolina native and ex-dB's leader Chris Stamey helmed the sessions, which also incorporated guest vocals by Whiskeytown alumna Caitlin Cary.

Their fourth album, Small Town Hymns, arrived the following year and reinforced their affinity for raw, country-tinged heartland rock anthems. American Aquarium enjoyed a standout 2012 highlighted by both the concert recording Live in Raleigh and the Jason Isbell-produced studio set Burn.Flicker.Die, their fifth full-length. Conceived at the time as a potential farewell, the record drew widespread praise and launched a prosperous stretch. Energized by that reception, Barham collaborated with producer Brad Cook of Megafaun on the more alt-rock-leaning Wolves, released in 2015. Another live document, Live at Terminal West, captured an Atlanta performance and appeared before year's end.

Roughly twelve months later Barham issued the introspective solo album Rockingham, which received favorable notices. American Aquarium kept performing with plans for a new studio effort in 2017, yet Barham disbanded the existing lineup early that year to pursue solo dates instead. By 2018 he had reconstituted the band with fresh members and signaled the shift by joining New West Records. Their debut for the label, Things Change, reflected Barham's growing emphasis on politically aware songwriting, a direction he extended on the band's ambitious eighth album, Lamentations. Issued in 2020 under Shooter Jennings's production, the record examined religion, politics, and the fractures within a sharply divided nation.

Seeking contrast to the weight of recent work, Barham next assembled a tribute to formative country tracks from his youth. Slappers, Bangers, and Certified Twangers, Vol. 1 appeared in May 2021 and featured American Aquarium interpreting major hits by Trisha Yearwood, Jo Dee Messina, and Toby Keith among others. The salute to '90s country extended later that year with the comparably energetic Vol. 2. Original material resumed on the ninth studio album, Chicamacomico, recorded in 2022 at Sonic Ranch studios in Texas and titled after the historic Coast Guard station and museum on North Carolina's Hatteras Island. That same year the band made its Ryman Auditorium debut in Nashville. Reuniting with producer Shooter Jennings, they tracked the subsequent LP at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. Released in July 2024, The Fear of Standing Still signaled a return to the heavier, rock-oriented sound of earlier releases following the more acoustic previous effort.
