Andrew Combs, a singer and songwriter raised in Dallas, moved to Nashville with the goal of building a music career and brought along an ability to fuse modern indie Americana with warm, retro country-pop reminiscent of Mickey Newbury, Harry Nilsson, and Townes Van Zandt. His first full-length release, the 2012 album Worried Man, arrived after he had already put out an independent debut EP titled Tennessee Time in 2010. That early collection drew favorable critical notice, leading to a publishing agreement with Razor & Tie the same year his debut LP appeared.

The next twelve months found him touring alongside Caitlin Rose and Shovels & Rope, and 2015 brought his second album, All These Dreams, on Coin Records. Following his signing to New West, Combs issued Canyons of My Mind in 2017 and followed it a year later with the EP Andrew Combs Sings 5 Covers and a Song. For his fourth album, the candid Ideal Man, he sought a more unvarnished tone by teaming with producer and engineer Sam Cohen, whose credits include work with Kevin Morby and Benjamin Booker. The sessions took place live inside Cohen’s studio, after which New West released the record in 2019; its arrangements incorporated synths and distortion to shift his established sound.
