Biography
Caitlin Rose, a Nashville-based singer and songwriter, draws from classic country, rootsy rock & roll, dreamy pop, and an array of additional sources to shape her sound. Her vocal delivery combines sweetness with power, conveying both yearning and resistance in equal measure, a quality mirrored in the airy, twang-tinged country-pop of 2010’s Own Side Now and the more assertive, driving style of 2013’s The Stand-In. Following an extended recording hiatus, she resurfaced in 2022 with Cazimi on Missing Piece Records, a mature statement that captured the full range of her artistic identity.
Born in Dallas, Texas, on June 23, 1987, Rose is the daughter of Liz Rose, the Grammy-winning songwriter whose credits include co-writing tracks for Taylor Swift’s albums Taylor Swift, Fearless, and Red as well as material for Carrie Underwood, Lee Ann Womack, and Martina McBride. Raised in Nashville, Tennessee, she began composing songs at age sixteen. During her teenage years she performed with the band Save Macaulay, which dissolved just before an EP could appear; Rose adapted those songs for solo use, resulting in the 2008 seven-track release Dead Flowers. The set contained five originals alongside interpretations of classics by Patsy Cline and the Rolling Stones and marked her first public outing. A series of singles followed, and her understated recordings together with her stage performances earned her notice as an emerging talent.
Her debut full-length album, Own Side Now, appeared in 2010 on the British independent label Names Records. The record’s fusion of country, folk, and indie-rock elements drew favorable notices on both sides of the Atlantic; ATO Records issued it in the United States the following year, widening her audience, and Time magazine’s Claire Suddath selected it among the ten best albums of 2011.
After extensive touring, Rose delivered a more refined and forceful second album, The Stand-In, in 2013. Issued again by Names in the United Kingdom and ATO in the United States, it sustained the critical momentum established by her first long-player.
The demands of heightened visibility and relentless road work prompted a period away from the spotlight. Rose appeared only sporadically in subsequent years and initiated work on a third album in 2017 before abandoning the project. In early 2020 she entered Nashville’s Sound Emporium studio with producer Jordan Lehning and musicians that included William Tyler and Luke Schneider. Although the basic tracks were captured successfully, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic suspended further progress. She occupied the interim by issuing an expanded reissue of Own Side Now in 2021 and continued refining the new material with Lehning until conditions allowed its completion. After several tracks surfaced on streaming platforms, Cazimi arrived in November 2022.
