Whitney Rose, a singer and songwriter from Canada, characterizes her music as "vintage-pop-infused neo-traditional country." Early life on Prince Edward Island introduced her to the genre through frequent visits to her grandparents' bar, whose jukebox featured constant selections from Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline, and Dolly Parton. She regards the final two artists, along with Keith Whitley, as her primary genre inspirations. Songwriting began for her during the teenage years.

Relocation to Toronto placed her amid the local folk and coffeehouse community, even as her compositions adhered strictly to country conventions. Awards came her way during that period, and she completed a self-titled debut album for Cameron House. Canadian dates followed alongside the Devin Cuddy Band. In 2012 she relocated to a farm in Southampton, Nova Scotia, specifically to generate material for a subsequent project. Opening slots for the Mavericks across Canada in 2014 led to an offer from frontman Raul Malo to produce, sing, and perform on her forthcoming record, an invitation she accepted.

Malo assembled fellow band members, Cuddy, and additional musicians for the sessions, which spanned four days at Revolution Studios in Toronto. Heartbreaker of the Year appeared first in Canada during April 2015 and reached international markets that August. South Texas Suite, a mini-album reflecting her recent move to Austin, Texas, arrived in January 2017. Rule 62 followed in October of that year, produced by Raul Malo and Niko Bolas. We Still Go to Rodeos emerged in 2020. Pandemic conditions postponed live performances until 2021. Studio work resumed in late 2022, culminating in the May 2023 release of Rosie, her sixth album, on MCG Recordings.
