Although his moniker suggests outlaw grit, Sam Outlaw avoids the role of a deliberate throwback paying homage to Waylon Jennings. Instead, this understated Americana performer weaves together an array of country sources, blending Western swing with the expansive cosmic sounds native to his adopted city of Los Angeles, California. That fusion first took full shape on Tenderheart in 2017; four years later, Popular Mechanics introduced new-wave textures to his forward-leaning country style.

Born Sam Morgan on July 28, 1982, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, he moved with his family to Southern California at the age of ten. Music remained a constant passion, yet he initially built a career in advertising before deciding, in his early thirties, to pursue performing full-time. He adopted his mother’s maiden name for the stage and issued a self-released EP in 2014 that quickly earned invitations to both the Stagecoach Festival and AmericanaFest. The exposure drew the interest of veteran roots guitarist Ry Cooder, who joined his son Joachim in co-producing the 2015 debut album Angeleno.

Consistent road work helped Angeleno generate strong attention, reaching number 22 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and winning International Album of the Year at the 2017 U.K. Americana Awards. By then Outlaw had completed his follow-up, Tenderheart, which arrived that April. In 2019 he issued the satirical EP Hat Acts, a collection of honky-tonk numbers and comedy sketches, and served as co-producer on Michaela Anne’s Desert Dove. His third studio album, Popular Mechanics, emerged in November 2021, folding the glossy timbres of MTV’s peak era into his melodic country framework.
