Biography
Caleb Caudle, a singer and songwriter drawing equal inspiration from American indie, classic rock, and roots rock, has developed a devoted cult audience through the albums Carolina Ghost in 2016 and Crushed Coins in 2018. His songwriting sits firmly within the Americana movement of the twenty-first century, displaying clear parallels to Ryan Adams and Jason Isbell in both its evocative melodies and introspective lyrics, while the albums themselves fuse the burnished country-rock of the 1970s with spooky modern rock to produce a distinctive roots sound. Paint Another Layer on My Heart from 2014 most plainly reveals his rock influences, Carolina Ghost brings the country elements to the forefront, and Crushed Coins ventures into moodier, more atmospheric studio techniques.
A native of the Winston-Salem area of North Carolina, Caudle first took up music as a teenager, most notably in the group the Bayonets. Punk provided his initial spark, yet his tastes gradually broadened to embrace rootsier styles. He issued the independent debut Red Bank Road in 2007 but waited until after Tobacco Town in 2012 to pursue music full-time. Two years later came Paint Another Layer on My Heart, which stressed his heartland roots. Carolina Ghost, arriving in 2016, directed him toward country sounds, while its 2018 successor, Crushed Coins, found him working with War on Drugs producer Jon Ashley to pursue a darker approach. Caudle moved from North Carolina to Nashville in 2019, and his next album was tracked in that new base. In pursuit of a natural sound, he recorded Better Hurry Up from 2020 at the Cash Cabin, Johnny Cash’s former personal studio, enlisting musicians from Wilco, the Jayhawks, Drivin’ N Cryin’, and the road bands of Willie Nelson and Sturgil Simpson.
