Zach Bryan emerged as a reflective country songwriter with deep ties to the storytelling traditions of Red Dirt music, a connection he honored by penning a tribute to Evan Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours. The Oklahoma native, who divided his early years between Oologah and Tulsa, received his first guitar at age fourteen and quickly taught himself both the instrument and the craft of songwriting. Following family precedent, he enlisted in the Navy upon reaching adulthood, just as his parents and paternal grandfather had done, yet continued composing during off-duty hours.

While on leave in Jacksonville, Florida, Bryan and several friends impulsively captured his debut album, DeAnn, at a local Airbnb; the project took its title from his late mother and surfaced in 2019. Online clips and the record itself drew attention within Red Dirt circles, prompting him to cut a follow-up the same way. Elisabeth arrived in 2020, anchored by the track “Heading South,” and its momentum carried into 2021 with live renditions of “Hell or Highwater” and “Condemned” plus Bryan’s first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Early the next year he issued “From Austin,” the opening single from American Heartbreak, a sprawling triple album released via Warner Records in May 2022 that debuted at number one on Billboard’s Country Albums chart and number five on the Billboard 200. An extensive touring run concluded with a concert at Red Rocks that was preserved as the live set All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster. In January 2023 Bryan shared the single “Dawns” featuring Maggie Rogers, then delivered his self-titled album that August; the project topped the Billboard 200 along with the Top Country, Folk, and Rock Albums charts and included the Grammy-winning duet “I Remember Everything” with Kacey Musgraves as well as contributions from the Lumineers, Sierra Ferrell, and the War and Treaty.

“Pink Skies” preceded his fifth album, The Great American Bar Scene, which appeared digitally on July 4, 2024; the record underscored Bryan’s literary bent and showcased guest spots from John Mayer and Bruce Springsteen.
