Hailing from Lubbock, Texas, the Josh Abbott Band blended updated elements into classic Lone Star country, shaped by Abbott’s songcraft that paired old-school emotional warmth with a contemporary taste for weekend festivities. While enrolled at Texas Tech, Abbott first took up guitar after discovering the output of Texas songwriters including Pat Green and Wade Bowen. An evening watching the Randy Rogers Band at Blue Light Live, one of Lubbock’s premier rooms for singer/songwriters, prompted him to begin composing, and in 2004 he appeared at an open-mike night there alongside fraternity brother Austin Davis on banjo. Following their second appearance at the venue, Davis felt ready to request a headlining slot and to capture the performance for a live recording.

Although several years passed before Abbott and Davis issued any product, the pair soon expanded into a full ensemble by adding Preston Wait on guitar and fiddle plus Edward Villanueva on drums. By 2007 the group had issued a self-released demo containing the track “Taste,” and once bassist James Hertless and guitarist Caleb Keeter joined, the Josh Abbott Band roster was finalized. In 2008 the act had built sufficient regional momentum to begin performing beyond Texas borders, and that same year JAB issued its debut full-length, Scapegoat, on the independent Pretty Damn Tough Records imprint. The 2010 follow-up, She’s Like Texas, reflected the returns of constant road work; the independently released set reached number 28 on the Country Albums chart and enabled the band to sell out Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth—frequently described as “the world’s largest honky tonk” with a 6,000 capacity—for the first time. She’s Like Texas also yielded the single “Oh, Tonight,” a collaboration with Kacey Musgraves that climbed to number 44 on the Country Singles chart.

The 2012 album Small Town Family Dream, again on Pretty Damn Tough, performed more strongly still, rising to number five on the Country Albums chart and number 14 on the Top 200. Its single “Touch,” which appeared in the film The Longest Ride, peaked at number 41 on the Country survey. In fall 2014 the Josh Abbott Band teamed with Atlantic Records for the five-song EP Tuesday Night, which reached number 12 on the Country Albums list; the group then returned to Pretty Damn Tough for the 2015 concept album Front Row Seat, which traced the arc of a relationship and drew from Abbott’s personal divorce. Featuring the singles “Ghosts” and “Amnesia,” Front Row Seat attained number nine on the Country Albums chart and number one on the Independent Albums survey.

Abbott resurfaced in August 2017 with the band’s fifth studio album, Until My Voice Goes Out, which reflected on the arrival of his daughter and the loss of his father and included the single “I’m Your Only Flaw.” The set reached number twenty-two on the U.S. country charts. On October 1, 2017, the Josh Abbott Band played the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, mere hours before a gunman opened fire on the crowd. In the aftermath Abbott postponed several dates in deference to the victims and their families.
