John Baumann first established himself as a professional songwriter before stepping forward as a plain-spoken country singer, most notably through “Gulf Moon,” which Kenny Chesney recorded in 2018. Within Texas’ Red Dirt country scene he occupies a distinctive niche, shaped by the influence of iconic Texans Guy Clark and Robert Earl Keen. While his lyrics carry a literary quality, the music itself ranges across varied textures, moving between spare, dusty troubadour ballads and the shifting sonic palette heard on his 2020 album Country Shade.

Born in San Antonio, Baumann spent his early years traveling across the Lone Star State before making Austin his home. He issued his self-released debut, High Plains Alchemy, in 2014. Two years later came Proving Grounds, whose reach across Texas grew in part through the single “The Trouble with Drinkin’,” a version of an Aaron Lee Tasjan composition.

Following that release, Baumann joined the roster of The Next Waltz, the independent label run by singer-songwriter Bruce Robison. Around the same period he became a member of the Red Dirt supergroup the Panhandlers alongside Josh Abbott, Cleto Cordero, and William Clark Green. Conceived initially as a collection of covers, the group’s self-titled first album instead consisted of original songs and appeared in March 2020. Shortly afterward Baumann delivered Country Shade, his third full-length project.
