Biography
Standing tall at the crossroads of outlaw country’s bold attitude and rock & roll’s raw drive, Texas singer-songwriter Koe Wetzel swiftly emerged from the shadows to rank among the Lone Star State’s most celebrated country performers. His lyrics chronicle rough-and-tumble living and reckless exploits—one standout cut bears the title “Drunk Driving”—set against slashing electric guitars, booming percussion, and commanding vocals. A devoted following crystallized around the 2017 release Noise Complaint, after which he joined Columbia for the 2020 album Sellout while preserving every ounce of his gritty sound and narrative edge. A series of 2022 singles built anticipation for the forthcoming Hell Paso, and early the following year he scored another success with “High Road,” drawn from his sixth studio effort, 9 Lives.
Born July 14, 1992, in the East Texas community of Pittsburg, Wetzel absorbed music early through his mother, a vocalist who brought him onstage for his debut performance at age six. His father fueled an appreciation for classic hip-hop by playing Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. during car rides, while a cousin introduced him to the jagged guitars of Nirvana and Soundgarden. He began playing guitar at twelve, though athletics claimed most of his attention throughout adolescence.
At high school he competed in both football and baseball, later suiting up for Tarleton State University’s football team. As his passion for the sport faded, dedication to music intensified, prompting him to withdraw from college in 2012 and concentrate on writing and performing. He assembled Koe Wetzel & the Konvicts, issuing the EP Love and Lies in June 2012. The band logged countless miles across Texas and the Southwest, forging a fervent audience—especially among college listeners and twenty-somethings—through raucous yet relatable shows and magnetic stage presence.
Momentum built after the January 2015 full-length Out on Parole, yet Noise Complaint, arriving in March 2017, transformed Wetzel into a genuine Texas star. “February 28, 2016,” “Something to Talk About,” and “Tell It All Town” dominated regional airwaves and streaming playlists; when one major platform briefly removed his catalog over a licensing lapse, supporters rallied online and ultimately boosted his profile. Continuing to self-release and self-manage, he sold out progressively larger rooms and appeared at festivals throughout the Southwest.
Harold Saul High, his second album, surfaced in May 2019, and Sellout followed on Columbia in 2020, delivering further hard-charging singles including “Drunk Driving,” “Good Die Young,” and “Kuntry & Wistern.” He paired with fellow country-rock renegade Austin Meade for the 2021 single “Happier Alone,” then offered “April Showers” in April 2022 while headlining a major North American tour. “Creeps” arrived later that year to preview his fifth album. Crafted at the renowned Sonic Ranch studio with longtime associate Taylor Kimball, September 2022’s Hell Paso showcased Wetzel’s signature blend of arena-scale country and rock and climbed to number three on the Billboard Country Albums chart. In early 2024 he notched another triumph with “High Road” (feat. Jessie Murph), the highest-charting single yet for either artist; both that track and the R&B-tinged “Sweet Dreams” anchored his sixth studio album, 9 Lives.
