Biography
Kolby Cooper brought a honeyed twang and a lasting fondness for the polished textures of '90s country to the Red Dirt scene across the Southwest toward the close of the 2010s, setting him apart from many of his grittier contemporaries. The underlying warmth in his delivery and his skill at shaping pop hooks, showcased across the albums Good Ones Never Last (2019) and Boy from Anderson County to the Moon (2022), built a devoted audience and generated millions of streams.
Raised in the modest east Texas community of Bradford, he later identified nearby Palestine as his hometown. Cooper picked up guitar at age 12, drawing equal inspiration from classic country and '90s alternative rock. His teenage years proved difficult: his father succumbed to cancer when Cooper was 14, prompting him to begin songwriting and enter local talent contests. By 18 he had become both a husband and a father in rapid succession. Though he initially intended to pursue nursing studies, he opted to test the music industry instead. Four months after finishing at Cayuga High School, he entered the recording studio. His early composition "Every Single Kiss" served as his debut single in 2017 and was soon followed by the EP Vol. 1 in 2018.
Issued on Combustion Music in 2019, the album Good Ones Never Last broadened his reach along the Red Dirt circuit in the Southwest. The hit singles "If I Still Had It" and "2 Words" from 2020 appeared on his follow-up EP, Vol. 2. In 2021 Cooper issued the Boy from Anderson County EP, featuring the Jordan Walker co-written title track that also became a hit, in a continued effort to reach wider audiences. Every one of the EP's six songs was later included on the full-length Boy from Anderson County to the Moon released in 2022.
